What Are Cannabinoids and the Endocannabinoid System?

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in the hemp plant. Different cannabinoids interact uniquely with the body’s endocannabinoid system. This system helps regulate processes such as mood, sleep, stress response, and pain perception.

Think of the ECS as a “messenger network” that helps different parts of the body communicate so they can work smoothly together. The ECS plays a role in many everyday functions, including:

  • how you feel and respond to stress
  • how well you sleep
  • how your body perceives and responds to discomfort
  • your mood
  • appetite and digestion
  • overall sense of balance and well‑being

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the most widely studied cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Unlike THC, CBD is non-intoxicating and non-addictive. CBD interacts with several systems in the body, including the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in maintaining internal balance. Because of this, many people choose to include CBD in their daily routine to support relaxation, balance, and overall well-being.

  • Pain

May influence pathways involved in how the body perceives discomfort.

  • Mood

May help regulate stress to support a sense of calm.

  • Sleep

May help the body and mind relax before bedtime.*

What is CBN?

CBN, or cannabinol, is another naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the hemp plant. Like CBD, CBN is non-intoxicating. CBN interacts with the endocannabinoid system, with some affinity for CB1 and CB2 receptors, and may also influence other pathways involved in relaxation and rest. CBN has been studied for how it interacts with the ECS and related pathways associated with relaxation and rest, and many people choose to include CBN as part of their evening routines.

Sleep: May help support sleep continuity and reduce nighttime awakenings.*

What is CBG?

CBG, or cannabigerol, is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in the hemp plant.CBG comes from CBGA, the "parent molecule" from which all major cannabinoids—including CBD and THC—are naturally produced in the hemp plant. CBG interacts with the endocannabinoid system as well as adrenergic, TRPV1, and serotonin receptors. Because of this, many people choose to include CBG in their daily routine to support calm, comfort, and mental clarity.

  • Mood

May help support a sense of calm and reduce everyday stress.

  • Comfort

May play a role in supporting the body’s natural response to minor discomfort.

  • Focus

May support alertness and mental clarity without the sedating effects associated with some other cannabinoids.*

What is CBC?

CBC, or cannabichromene, is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in the hemp plant. CBC does not bind strongly to CB1 receptors in the brain, which is why it does not produce a “high.” Instead, CBC interacts with TRPV1 and TRPA1 receptors involved in pain and inflammation signaling.

Comfort: May support the body’s natural response to minor aches and discomfort through its interaction with pain-related receptors.*

What is THC?

THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the hemp plant. THC interacts directly with CB1 receptors in the brain and nervous system, which is why it can produce intoxicating effects at higher levels. In low, legally compliant amounts, THC is sometimes included alongside other cannabinoids as part of formulations designed to support relaxation, comfort, and sleep.

Some CBD CLINIC™ formulations include low-dose THC to complement other cannabinoids and create a balanced effect.

Full‑spectrum hemp products contain only trace amounts of THC (no more than 0.3% by dry weight, as defined by the 2018 Farm Bill), and are generally considered non-impairing when included in federally compliant hemp products. These trace amounts are part of the natural plant profile commonly referred to as "full spectrum" which includes a range of cannabinoids and other naturally occurring compounds.

  • Comfort

May complement other cannabinoids in supporting physical comfort.

  • Relaxation & Sleep

May support relaxation and sleep onset.

  • Entourage Support

May help support the overall effects of CBD and other cannabinoids through the entourage effect.*

Practitioner Guidance Matters

Cannabinoids may affect individuals differently based on factors such as health history, medications, and sensitivities. Working with a qualified practitioner helps ensure the right cannabinoid products, serving sizes, and routines are selected for your specific needs.
