Presentation recap
The endocannabinoid system is one of the body’s signaling networks, and it is involved in sleep, pain, stress, and memory. The talk covers what the system is and how it may change with age, the everyday levers that move it (movement, sleep, stress, and diet), what the research shows for cannabinoids in sleep, stress, and pain, and what to know about product quality, drug interactions, and dose.
Presenter
Chief Scientific Officer, Charlotte’s Web
Dr. Marcel Bonn-Miller earned a BA in psychology and PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Vermont and completed his Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine. He began his career at the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, where he built and directed two fully grant-funded cannabis research centers. He then transitioned to industry roles as Director of Cannabinoid Research at Zynerba Pharmaceuticals, Vice President of Human and Animal Research at Canopy Growth Corporation, and currently serves as Chief Scientific Officer at Charlotte’s Web.
Widely considered one of the early and leading research pioneers in the field of cannabis and mental health, Dr. Bonn-Miller has conducted seminal work on the interrelations between cannabis/cannabinoids and a range of health conditions, including pain, anxiety, HIV, PTSD, and sleep disorders. He brings a unique perspective to cannabinoid therapeutics, having worked in medical center and academic settings for over a decade and within industry for the past 9 years. He serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals and has published over 175 peer-reviewed empirical publications on cannabis.
Video
In about a minute, Marcel Bonn-Miller, PhD, introduces the endocannabinoid system and the range of processes it is involved in.
[On screen: the CBD CLINIC logo above a search bar. The question “What is the endocannabinoid system?” is typed in. Marcel Bonn-Miller, PhD, is then identified on screen.]
Marcel Bonn-Miller, PhD: So the endocannabinoid system is really a system that is central for a lot of different processes in the body. A term that was coined a little while back was eat, sleep, protect, forget, relax. And those are really sort of shows the breadth of the different systems that are controlled by the endocannabinoid system.
And when it comes out of balance, then we see problems: problems sleeping, problems relaxing. The endocannabinoid system is a system that needs to remain, ideally, in homeostasis. If you do something to support it, that may only last for a short period of time.
When we think about, you know, especially with the processes eat, sleep, relax, protect, forget, these are ones that aren’t just, you know, “I need to relax today, but not tomorrow,” or “I need to sleep well tonight, but not next week.” And so really, when we think about addressing these problems, we think about long-term solutions.

From the presentation | Five things to take home
Five ideas from the talk, each with the published research behind it. Open a takeaway to read the detail.
It is a body-wide signaling system: receptors, messengers the body makes on demand (anandamide and 2-AG), and enzymes that clear them. It is involved in sleep, pain, stress, and memory.
Tone is the overall level of signaling in the system. In one study of cannabis users, adults aged 55 to 71 had lower anandamide at their first blood draw than adults aged 21 to 24. In animal studies, the system helps bring the body back to balance after stress, and mice born without its main receptor showed early, age-like memory decline.
In studies of fit and young adults, a slow jog or moderate run raised anandamide, and several nights of short sleep led to a higher, later daily peak of 2-AG. Diet and stress can move the system too, not always in the same direction, and a rise or a fall is not good or bad by itself.
Weigh the evidence by product: substantial for cannabis in chronic pain, most often tested as a THC and CBD spray, and early for CBN in sleep and for cannabinoids in stress. Before anything else, check product quality (ask for a batch-specific certificate of analysis), your medications, and the dose.
Since April 2026, a program from the Innovation Center at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Substance Access Beneficiary Engagement Incentive, lets participating organizations in two Medicare models, ACO REACH and the Enhancing Oncology Model, provide eligible hemp products to eligible patients, up to $500 a year. A physician first decides that use is appropriate and documents a shared decision covering benefits, risks, and current medications. Participants in a third model, LEAD, can offer it starting January 2027. Eligible hemp products are limited to federally legal hemp and other parameters set by CMS.
Foundational science
Four points from the talk, from the body’s own signaling system to the plant compounds that act on it.
Receptors are the locks (CB1, concentrated in the brain, and CB2, first found on immune cells).
The body’s own messengers, anandamide and 2-AG, are the keys, made on demand. In lab studies, 2-AG was far more plentiful in the brain and switched CB1 fully on, while anandamide switched it on only partway.
Enzymes, FAAH and MAGL, are the cleanup crew that keeps each signal brief.
CB1concentrated in the brain, also found elsewhere in the body
CB2first found on immune cells, such as those in the spleen
Scientists found the first receptor while studying how THC, the main intoxicating compound in cannabis, works, and only then found the body’s own molecules that fit it.
Over 120 cannabinoids have been identified in cannabis. THC activates CB1, the receptor behind the high. CBD (cannabidiol) binds the two main receptors only weakly and acts on several other targets. CBN (cannabinol) binds CB1 more weakly than THC, but CB2 about as strongly.
A full-spectrum hemp extract carries CBD plus other cannabinoids, aroma compounds called terpenes, and a little THC. An isolate is CBD alone.

Safety and quality
In this short video, Marcel Bonn-Miller, PhD, discusses what published data show for CBD in healthy adults, and what makes a product clinic ready, from the science behind a formula to seed-to-shelf quality control.
From the talk. Before anything else, check product quality (ask for a batch-specific certificate of analysis), your medications, and the dose.
[On screen: the CBD CLINIC logo above a search bar. The question “Is CBD safe?” is typed in. Marcel Bonn-Miller, PhD, is then identified on screen.]
Marcel Bonn-Miller, PhD: The conclusion from all the data independently analyzed was, and this is published data, in a healthy adult, CBD is pretty safe.
What distinguishes products that are truly clinic ready versus not is how rooted in the science they are. If a product is developed science forward, based off of our understanding of the literature, and it’s linked to a specific outcome, the reason these ingredients are in there, the dose that is conveyed to the patient or consumer in terms of how much to use of it, that is a product I would say that’s clinic ready.
So seed to shelf control really matters, because we have traceability from the minute the seed goes into the ground until the package goes out of the warehouse for shipping. We have quality controls along that entire process.
